Last minute goal vs Nepal secure Sri Lanka the Semi Finals slot

A late winner by Mohamed Rifnas in the injury time of the second half gave Sri Lanka a 1 – 0 win against Nepal in the SAFF Championship 2015 held at the Greenfield Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram today. The 20 year old Mohamed Rifnas, who plays for the Sri Lankan club Renown SC and who was adjudged the man-of-the-tournament in the recently concluded Super League, capitalized on an error by the Nepal defender Biraj Maharjan in the 4th minute of the injury time, came from behind to calmly shoot the ball in to the back of the net to give Nepal virtually no time for a comeback.

In the game that was largely dominated by the Gorkhalis, the costly error in the dying minute of the game means Nepal will be knocked out of the tournament if they lose their next game against hosts India on December 27, 2015. The loss also means that the Gorkhalis are yet to win an international game since September 2013 after their 2-1 victory against India in the 2013 edition of SAFF championship that was held in the landlocked country.
