Sri Lankan tail led by Angelo Mathews smashed past Australian bowling but lost the third ODI with a ball to spare and five runs remaining, on Friday.
Angelo Mathews' 64 took his team within touching distance of Australia's 231. This despite visitors being reduced to 143/7. Mitchell Starc, Daniel Christian and Xavier Doherty claimed two wickets each but a string of partnerships towards the end had Michael Clarke's side under pressure.
18 runs were required of the last over and Mathews blasted Starc for a boundary and a six of the first two deliveries. The strike was then rotated twice but Mathews eventually top-edged the fifth delivery into the hands of a waiting Christian at long-on.
Earlier in the day, Clarke had propelled his team with his 57. There were a string of useful contributions from the middle-order as well.
