13, May 2012 (Cricturf): Cricket is a sport that all Sri Lankans love in common and many young aspiring cricketers one day hope to take on cricket as a profession. But there are also those instances where these young children tend to grow up and get into different professions but cricket as a sport never seem to leave them. One good example for this story is the Annual Law-Medical Cricket Encounter played between the Lawyers and Doctors of Sri Lanka.

Jointly organized by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Medical Association, this annual encounter started back in 2008 by the Bar association of Sri Lanka with the assistance of the Lawyers Cricket Club. And this unique encounter between the two professions has continued along the years and has now reached its 5th year of play when the Annual Law Medical Cricket Encounter 2012 was played today (13th May 2012).

This year’s encounter played at the Colts Cricket Club grounds was organized by the Sri Lanka Medical Association with the assistance of the Doctors Cricket Club of Sri Lanka and was played for the Prof Rizvi Sheriff Trophy.

The Doctors who went into bat first in the game in which 40 overs were allocated for each team were bowled out for 197 runs in 39.2 overs. Dr.Rajiv high scored for the Medical Team with a score of 87 runs while Dr.Chameera chipped in 31 runs to put up a decent score on the board. Rajeev from the Law Team stared with the ball by taking 3 wickets for 19 runs while Tharanga also took 3 wickets by giving away 34 runs and Maneesh also helped the bowling department by taking 2 wickets for 25 runs.

The Lawyers who can be easily called the Champions of the Encounter as they have won all four previous encounters held over the years came out to bat requiring 198 runs in 40 overs which they easily got to win the encounter for the 5th consecutive year. Asela high scored for the lawyers with 75 runs while Yohan and Priyantha scored 38 and 35 runs respectively to lead the Lawyers team into victory with a boundary off the last ball played scoring 200 runs for the loss of 6 wickets thereby winning the match by 4 wickets.

Another notable fact in this encounter is also that the Lawyers Team who have been the champions for the past 3 years have also participated in the Lawyers Cricket World Cup tournament and last year were placed runners up of the tournament. The tournament also started in 2009 in India have cricket teams comprised of lawyers from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Australia and Barristers from England and Wales and the next tournament in this series will be held in India in 2013.

Another interesting aspect of the encounter in this year was the 6-a-side cricket match between the Lady Doctors and the Female Lawyers which was played as a friendly game. (The Match won by woman Lawyers)
