Yesterday, we at Cricturf thought of contributing from the way we can to support the protest against SOPA/PIPA and made an awareness banner in front of the page till 12 midnight. With the competition for web traffic among the websites, we assume that we were the only Sri Lankan site who took such a step at least in the small scale to create the awareness about these two dreadful bills. Most would think it is just for the advertising or attention grabbing purposes for the site. But read the below and see why we came to the conclusion to take such an action.

Let’s talk about how a sports fan, not only Cricket but any sport uses the free content in the cyber world to gain knowledge and learn quick facts. How many of you have first checked and read the entire bio about your favorite player/sports person through Wikipedia for the first time? And how many of you who wants to know everything about a player/sportsman ends up first going through his/her Wikipedia page? Answer these questions. It doesn’t have to be a normal fan; it can be a journalist, analyst, sports writer or anyone who first go to Wikipedia to find the basic information and to get an idea of the topic/player or the tournament. And no matter whether you are a kid, teenager or a grown up adult all three of you will go access this to get a basic idea and information.

Taking another instance, a friend of yours comes and asks you about wanting to learn the history of a game or the entire rules and regulations with the governing body of the game, what is the first and the ideal place you will suggest your friend or send a link from? At least for me it always has been a Wikipedia page as the suggestion.

Just take a minute and think about this. It’s just not only Wikipedia even though taken as an example. Think how many times and how much of things you have learnt every day related to sports as a fan or whoever because of what is stated above and be a part of the protest against SOPA and PIPA as you can and share this if you agree.
